The Made America Gift Guide: American-Made Presents for Every Occasion

A working list of gifts made in the United States — for the cook, the traveler, the new homeowner, and the friend who has everything.

A good gift says two things: I know you, and I took the time. American-made goods do both. They tend to come from small shops where a person put their name on the work, and they last long enough that the recipient will remember where it came from years later.

For the cook

Cast iron is the classic answer, and for good reason — a skillet from a domestic foundry will outlive you. Round it out with a hand-forged chef's knife from a small U.S. bladesmith and a cotton apron cut and sewn stateside. Browse the cookware and home goods categories to see who's making what.

For the traveler

A full-grain leather dopp kit, a small-batch canvas duffel, or a made-here wallet with real edge stitching. These are the pieces that pick up character with use. Look for makers in leather goods and bags.

For the new homeowner

American-milled wool blankets, hand-thrown ceramics, a set of glass tumblers from a domestic glassworks, or a solid-wood cutting board from a small woodshop. Everyday objects, made properly, are the most under-appreciated gift category there is.

For the friend who has everything

Consumables. Small-batch coffee roasted in the U.S., a bottle from an American distillery, honey from a domestic apiary, or a candle poured in a small workshop. Nothing to store, nothing to dust, everything to enjoy.

Under $50

  • A pair of American-milled wool socks.
  • A hand-thrown ceramic mug from a small studio.
  • A canvas-and-leather keychain from a domestic leather shop.
  • A jar of small-batch hot sauce or maple syrup.
  • A screen-printed heavyweight tee, cut and sewn in the U.S.

Whatever you pick, buy it directly from the maker when you can. The dollar goes further, and the story travels with the gift.
